What makes this recipe special?
- It uses a syrup that is like a homemade grenadine syrup (pomegranate juice + sugar) but with an Indian twist from the addition of ginger powder and chaat masala.
- The Indian spiced grenadine syrup can be made in a large batch and up to two months in advance so it is perfect to make for a large party!
- This mocktail can easily be made into cocktail with the addition of either gin or vodka.
Ingredients for grenadine syrup with an Indian twist
Grenadine syrup is just pomegranate juice that is simmered with sugar to create something delicious for Shirley Temple or Roy Rogers drinks. My version is similar but adds Indian spices like chaat masala and ginger powder for a twist! Here are the ingredients:
- Pomegranate Juice - I use the POM brand because it is easier than getting and juicing a pomegranate myself.
- Sugar
- Ginger Powder - Adds a warm, throat-soothing element to the syrup.
- Chaat Masala - Adds tang to the syrup. This is most available in an Indian grocery or online.

- Make it an Indian Shirley Temple by substituting the seltzer water with some sprite and garnish it with candied cherries.
- Make it a Roy Rogers by adding the syrup to some Coke or Pepsi.
- Add ginger beer or ginger ale to give this mocktail a virgin Moscow mule vibe!
How to make this mocktail a cocktail
- Replace the selzer water in this recipe with hard seltzer.
- Add 1.5 ounces of either gin or vodka which pairs well with this mocktail.
Making and batching this for a large crowd

You can easily increase the quantity of this recipe by doubling or tripling it. For parties, I prepare a large batch of the syrup in advance. When guests come, I simply mix the sparkling water with the syrup and hand the drink over or allow my guests to do it as an activity. I don't like mixing the whole cocktail in advance because the sparkling water can loose its spritz if you do it too early.

Chaat Spiced Pomegranate Mocktail
Ingredients
Indian Spiced Grenadine Syrup
- ½ cup (120 g) pomegranate juice
- ¾ cup (157 g) sugar
- ½ teaspoon (2 g) ginger powder
- ½ teaspoon (2 g) chaat masala
Pomegranate Chaat Spritz for 1 mocktail
- 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) Indian spiced grenadine syrup
- ½ cup (4 ounces) sparkling water
- candied ginger for garnish (Optional)
Instructions
Make the Indian Spiced Grenadine Syrup
- In a small saucepan add ½ cup (120 g) pomegranate juice, ¾ cup (157 g) sugar, ½ teaspoon (2 g) ginger powder, and ½ teaspoon (2 g) chaat masala.
- Turn the heat on the saucepan to medium-low until the sugar completely dissolves into the juice. Make sure not to allow the liquid to come to a boil as it can diminish the delicate flavor of the pomegranate juice.
- Pour the syrup into a clean heatproof container and let it cool before covering it with a lid. As the syrup cools, it will become thicker in consistency and can be stored at room temperature for 1-2 months but will last much longer in the fridge.
Assemble Chaat Spiced Pomegranate Mocktail
- Add 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) Indian spiced grenadine syrup to a cocktail glass and top with ½ cup (4 ounces) sparkling water. Stir to ensure the mocktail is thoroughly mixed.
- String a piece of candied ginger on a cocktail pick and serve!
